Abstract :
Some high speed roads have a special need for control and management. Since their introduction in the 1970s, control and communications systems have become a standard feature of all UK motorways. However, major roads which have been or are being upgraded for higher traffic speeds or improved traffic flows do not have control and communications facilities to a common standard such as is apparent on motorways. This paper considers two regions of road construction proposals: the East London Road Network and the North Circular Road; and the A55 North Wales Coast Road. Features considered for the systems are telephones, alarm push buttons in tunnels, matrix signal indicators, lane control signs, variable messages, loop detection, tunnel E&M monitoring, CCTV, tunnel entry prohibition signs, and radio communications in tunnels
