Abstract :
Surveys conducted on the performance and effectiveness of the first metering scheme on motorway access ramps in the Netherlands showed improvements in traffic operations on the motorway. The number of `rat runners´ decreased dramatically, the travel time from the ramps along the A10 decreased, the speed in front of a tunnel increased, and there is no longer a delay for public transport travelling along the S101 ramp. Driver compliance with the ramp signals has been very good, with no more than 2 to 5% violations of the red `stop´ signal. No enforcement has been necessary
