Abstract :
The advocates of advanced television services (ATS) in the United States agree that it will soon be technically possible to provide television programming with an enhanced viewing experience. The enhancements considered include a wider aspect ratio, better color, more visual detail, and improved stereophonic sound. The various technologies available for delivering real-time advanced television services to the home and the probable time lines for delivering those services are discussed. In doing so, the ground rules for the terrestrial broadcast service in the United States established by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are covered. Also discussed are the technical issues that will impact the timeliness of the broadcaster´s response. These include signal compatibility with NTSC, display resolution, and the timeliness of competing services. Finally, the author´s view on a likely sequence of events leading to a terrestrial broadcast ATV service is offered
