Abstract :
This paper presents a simple yet efficient technique to reduce computational complexity of MPEG2 based video coding and decoding. The approach is based on observation that existing coders and decoders spent many computations and memory accesses on processing macroblocks of bidirectionally predicted frames whose content remains actually same to the future reference frames. Experimental results show that skipping such macroblocks from processing can halve the average amount of computations and memory accesses involved in coding /decoding of B-frames without visible impact on picture quality.
