Abstract :
A step forward to equip Indonesian archipelagoes with an appropriate rural digital telephone exchange has been successfully completed. A trial run in Kamal, a village in a small island called Madura, showed that the system works well. The system was developed based on the digital concentrator which belongs to the large digital exchange by installing special control modules which make the concentrator more intelligent. Some aspects are considered such as: the mechanical provision, choice of the signalling system related to the transmission products and the existing equipment, interfacing to the existing telecommunication network, installation, and maintenance aspects. The responsibility of the telecommunication authority is to consider the fact that Indonesia has a unique geographic condition which has an impact on the network planning, the service activities and a balanced rural infrastructure between the social condition and the economic benefit of a certain rural area
