Abstract :
Recognising the limitations of the traditional approaches, and the fact that a great deal of reliance is still placed on the schedulers´ knowledge, the authors initiated a collaborative research programme with companies from the process industries in late 1987 to explore the use of knowledge based techniques for computer assisted planning and scheduling. The result of this project (initially called the GENESIS project) was the production of a prototype system using the KEE toolkit (from Intellicorp) and LISP on LISP machines: the performance of which was assessed following limited site trials
