Abstract :
From more than two dozen `AI planners´ developed and published since the 1960s, the authors have chosen SIPE (System for Interactive Planning and Execution) to investigate the utility of AI planners for construction project planning. They present their experience implementing SIPE to plan a multi-story office building construction project. They also present an overview of the development of AI planners, and their reasons for choosing SIPE to plan construction projects. The authors describe the representation constructs that they employed to model the office building project. They also discuss some of the limitations in SIPE that were identified during this implementation experience and explain how SIPE was extended to overcome its limitations and successfully generate correct plans for the office building project. SIPE´s performance in planning multi-story buildings and some guidelines to reduce the combinatorics are also considered
