Abstract
Meticulous care is normally exercised in determining and describing the detail of transient behaviour in the power electronic converter and the electric control part of variable speed drive systems. The influence of the mechanical components that form part of the drive systems is usually not treated with the same care. The authors describe an experimental facility that has been developed to determine the electromechanical transient behaviour of drive systems up to a level of 100 kW, taking the dynamic effects of the mechanical parts into consideration. This entails that special attention is given to the determination of the mechanical system variables, torque and angular acceleration, at various accessible and inaccessible points in the drive system
