Abstract :
Image quality and impairment evaluation methods continue to develop in the light of experience, and to respond to the demands of new systems. The author outlines some recent progress in procedures, and particular developments associated with digital system evaluation and HDTV evaluation. The needs of digital television may be met by a new concept termed the `picture-content failure-characteristics´. The needs of HDTV evaluations include new viewing conditions. Furthermore, a recent challenge in HDTV was to compare the quality potential of alternative HDTV production standards. He explains how a real scene was used as a reference in this case
