Abstract :
The evaluation of TV image quality has received much attention in an attempt to ensure optimum picture quality of TV programs. The attention mainly focuses on subjective evaluation of picture quality. The author describes measurements to determine image quality objectively. The quality measurements cover the sharpness of the image, the intensity distribution, colour biases and noise. Algorithms and results for each of these measurements are covered. The measurements were taken with a personal computer fitted with a frame grabber card. As such this picture quality analyzer can be used for quality control on studio outputs, and it can be used as feedback on system defects to allow rapid repair of equipment. It can be used as a technical quality reference that programs have to meet before transmission, instead of the indirect approach to determine technical quality by specifying the format and equipment that outside producers have to use
