Abstract :
The increasing use of electronic load and speed control techniques, and the connection of various nonlinear loads is contributing to increased distortion of electricity supply waveforms. Whilst there may be little scope for improving the performance of a conventional meter under such conditions, there is every opportunity for electronic meters to be designed with an appropriate balance between cost and performance. The authors argue that the first essential for an electronic meter designer is to comply with those standards that either exist, or are being drafted, and to use some judgement with regard to conditions that may not yet have been defined at all
