Abstract :
In early 1995, Johnson Controls Battery Group, Inc. (JCBGI) initiated a test program to evaluate the effects of several key design factors on valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery performance in uncontrolled, unregulated, high temperature environments. The program included two separate components, accelerated laboratory and real time field testing. Phoenix, Arizona (USA) was selected as the field test location based on the extreme high temperatures and uncontrolled environmental conditions to which the telecommunication batteries are exposed. With the cooperation of USWEST and NORTEL, six subscriber loop carrier (SLC) cabinets were chosen and equipped with remote monitoring capability. The relationship between the key design parameters, which include positive grid alloy, case wall support and the addition of gel to improve heat transfer capability, and high temperature float life is correlated and discussed. Results from the ongoing field testing of the high heat battery designs are compared. The paper also shows the value of remote battery monitoring
