  • Abstract
Based on the software radio technique, a five-channel VHF lightning detection method for cloud flashes is proposed in this paper. VHF radiation pulses emitted from the lightning channel are received by the five-element uniform circular arrays(UCA), and bandpass filtered in the frequency band from 110-118MHz. The band limited VHF signals are digitized with a sample rate of 52MHz, the Digital Down Converters(DDC) are used to shift their frequency down to baseband, and each channel has an I and a Q component. Using the combination of the phase difference between two baselines, the VHF sources can be located in digital signal processing (DSP) unit.
