  • Abstract
A performance analysis of trellis-coded modulation (TCM) schemes for indoor wireless communications is presented. The statistical model proposed by A.A. Saleh and R.A. Valenzuela (1987) for an indoor wireless channel is implemented to simulate the performance of TCM schemes over this type of multipath channel. The indoor channel is known to have very slowly varying frequency-selective Rayleigh fading. Simulations over a series of different fixed-channel amplitude responses are averaged to approximate the effect of the slowly varying multipath fading. Simple TCM constellations and bandwidth-efficient trellises that provide their own error control coding are discussed. Bit-error-rate performances of TCM with differential encoding are discussed. Preliminary results indicate that a linear equalizer improves the TCM performance as the delay spread of the channel impulse response increases
