Abstract
The telephone industry has long used lead acid batteries for back-up power to provide uninterruptible service. As an alternative to this approach, SatCon Technology Corporation has developed a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) specifically designed as a “plug for plug” replacement for batteries in telecommunications remote powering applications such as vaults, huts and cabinets. This paper describes the principles and practices of flywheel technology. In particular, the paper presents the SatCon 2.0 kWHr telecommunication flywheel specifications and components including composite rim, magnetic bearings, bi-directional inverter and PM motor/generator. In addition, the paper discusses monitoring capability, installation considerations and safety features as well as capital and operating cost of an installed unit
