Abstract :
Describes the research, development and implementation of a high level language: task orientated programming (TOP) for controlling industrial processes. TOP is aimed at replacing ladder-logic diagrams with an English structured language, allowing the machine operator to express the operation in simple `English´. The objectives of this paper include: the concepts of TOP and how they relate to industrial applications; the firmware organisation and different types of I/O interface; the user-interface and its effects on the TOP compiler; and illustrate the language by means of a practical example. The scope of this paper is confined to industrial control application using TOP. The ELS-2001 project is a joint venture between Oxford University and British Autogard Ltd
