Abstract
Reviews briefly the many image coding techniques developed since the mid 1960s, and also notes significant earlier developments. The author concentrates on techniques rather than implementations and considers methods for processing single frames and then examines the coding of image sequences. There is, finally, a brief look at the future of low rate coding
