Abstract :
A novel metallic wire substrate (MWS) is proposed for miniaturized planar microwave circuits. This MWS consists of a dense array of vertical metallic wires embedded in a regular host substrate. It is demonstrated experimentally to exhibit magneto- dielectrics properties with simultaneously enhanced effective permittivity and permeability in a broad frequency range. Consequently, a substrate of higher effective refractive index is obtained, which allows size reduction in planar components and antennas. The extracted permittivity and permeability are about 5.5 and 1.7 (compared to the host substrate with epsivr = 2.94), respectively, from DC to 10 GHz.
