Abstract :
This paper reviews current programs centered around the advances made in the total insulation system applied to high voltage stator coils. New coil consolidation materials have allowed better coil consolidation and reduction in manufacturing time. New groundwall tapes show promise in allowing higher operating voltage stress levels. The implementation of voltage grading tapes have improved the high voltage performance of stator coils during testing and under operating conditions and have a major impact on coil manufacturing. Electrical field analysis has been used to better understand the voltage stresses on the coil´s insulation system components. Improved functional evaluation techniques are used to accurately evaluate these major changes being made to stator coils. These changes are reviewed to present an overall picture of advances being made in the design and fabrication of high voltage stator coils
