  • Abstract
A simple three dimensional sub-band splitting scheme for HDTV is presented. The aim is to compress the interlaced HDTV signal which comes from a bit rate of 880 Mbit/s, down to less than 140 Mbit/s. The scheme uses perfect reconstruction and QMF filter banks to split a sequence of frames in the temporal, horizontal and vertical direction. The temporal high bands contain the motion information. After the filtering, subsampling is used in the spatial as well as in the temporal domain. To the subsampled bands bits are allocated, depending on the activities in those bands. Each band is divided in three different activity zones for which different quantizers are used. The resulting values are VLC coded using arithmetic coding. With this technique, good distribution quality results have been achieved
