Wide area pedestrian monitoring using video image processing

The authors discuss a project, the aim of which has been to investigate software techniques which can be used to obtain information on pedestrian movements automatically using image processing technology. In order to fulfil this aim, two separate algorithms have been developed. One is designed to provide a measure of the pedestrian activity within a user defined area of a scene, whilst the second detects the presence and walking direction of a pedestrian at a small user-defined window in a scene
