Abstract
In the Japanese telecommunication market, competition has intensified because of relaxed regulations and globalization, and NTT is promoting cost management using various measures to reduce service costs. This was announced at INTELEC89 in Florence, and the power TPU (total power up) exercise was developed in the energy section of NTT and has been in use since 1987. This has resulted in reduced depreciation costs, personnel expenses and energy costs. The Save POWER exercise was one energy cost reduction of TPU that brought about big results. However, energy consumption will continue to increase because of more facilities, high speed/broadband telecommunications and more development of multimedia than ever before. Therefore, NTT are drastically reviewing energy consumption from various points of view because in the past, the Save POWER exercise has not been enough to restrain increasing energy costs
