Abstract
The paper describes the issues involved in setting up a structured DC power modernisation programme to replace the old centralised power plant in service at a large number of the key switching centres in the BT core network. The paper considers not just the very important technical issues that need to be addressed before such a significant multi-million pound investment as this is implemented, but also the operational and financial factors. Resilience and continuity of service have become the key drivers for all telecommunications operators in the provision of reliable power systems for the networks of the future: these areas are fully considered
