Abstract
We present a framework for the development and evaluation of adaptive channel allocation schemes for wireless networks supporting multiple traffic classes. For an integrated voice and multimedia wireless network, a precise formulation of the problem of dynamically determining the parameters of a channel allocation scheme is developed in a mathematical optimization framework. A unified model to determine the parameter selection and to analyze the nonstationary behavior of the channel allocation scheme is developed using a Markov process model. Numerical method techniques are used to solve the associated Chapman-Kolmogorov equations and determine the nonstationary behavior of the resulting controls. Performance results on connection blocking are given for the proposed adaptive version of the channel allocation scheme. It is shown that the use of adaptive parameter selection provides considerable improvement in performance.
