Abstract :
The demand on the transmission system in England is leading towards higher power loadings without the introduction of new overhead lines. Criteria for system performance are not being relaxed. To maintain system performance at higher loadings with generation remote from the load has required the construction of nine static VAr compensators (SVC). The authors describe two types of compensator, one connected at 400 kV and one at 275 kV. The authors describe the actual network conditions and the characteristics of the SVCs to meet these conditions. Studies of transient and dynamic performance follow, with comparisons of tests of SVC controls conducted both on a factory simulator and on site
