Abstract
A novel location updating technique, the multilayer location updating method (MULTI). is proposed. The location updating signal traffic is distributed over all cells using this method, while, in the conventional method, it is concentrated on the cells located on the location area boundary. Short-term switching instability can be avoided. This method effectively reduces the required control channel number in the ultimate microcell system. The method was proposed as a Japanese digital cellular standard
