Abstract
A new principle for digital distance relays is presented by the authors. The principle of operation is based upon the superimposed theory and modal transformation. The modal voltages and currents of the fault components are used to determine fault zones. An algorithm is proposed and implemented with an IBM-PC in FORTRAN. EMTP is used to simulate fault data on a typical 500 kV transmission system in China. With the data, the performance of the relay under different types of faults, source/line impedance ratio, fault resistance and fault inception angles has been investigated
