Abstract
In this paper, we present an approach for modeling a two-port network based on single-port measurements and minimal information about the termination at the other port. The problem is approached with a specific application in mind: estimation of insertion loss of a telephone line based on measurements from the central office end only. An approach is proposed to estimate the insertion loss to within ±1 dB over a prescribed class of telephone lines for voice range applications. Results can then be projected to other frequencies in that range with the same accuracy
