Abstract :
Large interconnected power systems are often underdamped and if proper precautions are not taken power oscillations will occur. The basic concepts about their occurrence and the ameliorating measures have traditionally been derived from the single-machine infinite-bus model viewpoint which cannot unfortunately explain all the phenomena found in a more complex system. By means of modal and eigenvalue sensitivity analysis, based on the generalized multimachine representation, the authors show that it becomes possible to provide a more reliable and meaningful interpretation of the oscillation phenomena, with useful conclusions to be drawn from the study
