Abstract :
A new method for imaging the random media by analyzing power spectrum shapes using fractal dimensions is presented. It may be possible to estimate the structural characteristics from the spectrum, because the ultrasonic power spectrum shapes may be affected by the statistical distributions of the point scatterers in the random media. Fractal theory is adapted to estimate the power spectrum shapes. The fractal dimension is used for characterization of the complexities of the power spectrum shape because it indicates the complexity or roughness of figures. The relations of mean spacing vs. fractal dimension and irregularity vs. fractal dimension obtained by numerical calculations are given. An experiment for ultrasonic imaging by mapping the fractal dimension is described
