Abstract
The paper outlines the reasons for seeking common standards for enhanced television systems, and explains some basic design issues for such systems. The CCIR´s conclusions on potentially common system elements, between standards, are given. The current situation in the 525 and 625 parts of the world, in developing systems, is outlined; and the key issue of conversion format acceptability is considered in more detail. The status of the discussions and the standardisation timetable in the CCIR is given. The paper also makes observations on the prospects for agreement
