Abstract :
Presents a review of satellite and cable TV in Europe. Over 50% of the households in western Europe are connected to a cable network. This includes not only CATV (community antenna TV, large cable networks) but also MATV (master antenna TV, small cable networks). A review of the development of cable TV versus direct-to-home (DTH) households is given, showing the growth of CATV in particular. In the cable environment, calculations and recommendations are based on terrestrial transmission from origin, since in the years of development of PAL and SECAM the parameters of satellite transmission were chosen independently of the cable. Many people who have to make transmission calculations for cable networks, still do not realise the differences between satellite transmission DTH and satellite transmission followed by cable networks
