  • Abstract
A system has been implemented which allows ancillary communication circuits to be established for SNG/OB (satellite news gathering and outside broadcasting) operations using the same satellite capacity as the main signal. Good progress has also been made with international standardisation of the system. The implementation of the recommended system is expensive, but as the price of suitable equipment drops in line with advances in VSAT technology, it is expected that use of the system will become more widespread. There is some concern that the ancillary channel could be connected to the PSTN at the destination, effectively bypassing international telecommunication agreements. In providing the additional facilities, the intention is to support what can be a difficult broadcasting operation. It is hoped that the satellite operators will view this development in this light rather than as an attempt to undermine existing services
