Abstract :
The author describes the current and future market impact of wide-screen HDTV. He describes both the broadcasting and narrowcasting uses of HDTV technology. He also discusses the European government stimulation to the development of European HDTV and of the contribution of the commission to the development of legal standards in the transmission and distribution of HDTV programmes. Finally, he discusses the use of HDTV technology in certain specialist fields and to limited audiences. These are the narrowcasting applications of HDTV technology
