Abstract :
In early 1991 British Gas plc, Scotland, identified a requirement for a high speed resilient inter-office data communications network throughout the region. The network would provide services for Regional Headquarters in Edinburgh, seven large office sites throughout Scotland, with potential additional connections to depots ad showrooms. The project started in June 1991 with a feasibility study, followed by outline design approval of a business case, procurement and implementation. The authors present in the form of a case study the business and technical requirements, the process in which these were met and what practical lessons can be drawn concerning the state of the art and the approach to similar projects
