Abstract :
Describes some experiences in bidding for a CALS contract including one approach which has been taken to the design of an infrastructure to support a CALS/CITIS requirement. Since the CITIS is, in essence, a new application software layer on a database management system the approach taken to the provision of a CITIS service has been that of applying open system techniques and partitioning the CALS problem `in the large´ into smaller problems and their interfaces. This approach has the major advantage that it eases the problems associated with multi-national operation. Further, changes in business policy during the bid process can be mapped into changes in the architecture at short notice
