Abstract
A new synchronous flow control scheme for integrated ATM services using explicit rate indications (SER) is proposed in this paper. The presented scheme allocates bandwidth fairly, efficiently and rapidly. The rate of an available bit rate (ABR) source in the SER scheme goes up monotonously with time. By introducing virtual nodes, the transient durations experienced by ABR connections can further be reduced. Simulation results show that the transient durations in the SER scheme are very short. We have also found that the length of queues accumulated at switch ports are irrelevant to the number of the ABR connections across the ATM network
