Abstract :
In today´s competitive market electrical equipment must be designed to be efficient, reliable, cost effective and in some cases have to operate under both normal and abnormal operating conditions. The author looks at the basic principles of the finite element method when it is used as a computational tool for design. Special modelling facilities which are applied are discussed and examples of their use in electric machine design are presented
