The author examines the implications of interconnecting electrical power systems in the light of experience gained by National Grid Company UK (NGC) and its predecessors over the past 40 years on the interconnections with Scotland and France. The author addresses the planning, operational, commercial interfaces as well as customs and practices which influenced the developing use of the inter-connections. Future trends likely to effect the interconnections are also analysed
