  • Abstract
The physical optics (PO) in terms of the modified edge (MER) line integrals is presented in this article. The total field calculation by the MER has been developed for the case of the planar and smooth scattering surface [1]-[2]. However, for certain general surfaces the higher order terms needs to be taken into account in order to reproduce accurately the results of PO. In this article an extended treatment of MER is introduced to cover such contributions, where only a part of surface integration are reduced to line integration with the remaining area surface-integrated. The criterion or the decomposition of the area is based upon the Fresnel zones and the local characteristics of the scattering surface. The accuracy of the total field calculated by the extended treatment of MER and the PO is shown.
