Abstract :
When the short-time electric strength (Ed) of polymers is determined in accordance with IEC 243, breakdown is usually caused by surface discharges. Unless there are gross isolated defects, Ed is more dependent on the thickness d than on the area of the samples. Ed is affected by the permittivity and electric strength of the surrounding medium or the immersion medium. In this paper, the AC electric breakdown strength of thin polyester films as a function of sample thickness in air and oil was investigated. When d<0.2 mm, Ed is usually higher when samples are tested in oil than in air
