Abstract
The generation of line narrowed picosecond optical pulses, at gigabits/s repetition rates, has been achieved by gain switching a multiquantum well (MQW) distributed feedback (DFB) laser with an integral wavelength reference. Spectral linewidths as low as 0.6 Å have been obtained for the generated 30 ps pulses, substantially reduced from those possible using equivalent single contact devices. Near Fourier limited bandwidth products, as low as 0.26, are observed. Tuning of the wavelength has also been demonstrated by variation of the drive to the central region of the laser
