Abstract :
Many of the information systems in use in industry and commerce today have taken on a life of their own. They are large, inefficient, expensive to maintain and to a very large extent do not meet the real needs of the business. They have not been designed as a system from the outset-new applications have been added and new technology deployed without thought being given to the system functionality, performance, reliability, security, etc. Many of today´s systems are a mess, and they have not benefited from the advances made in system engineering and complexity management. The author examines these issues and provides an example of systems for business support
