Dynamic simulation is undoubtedly one of the most effective types of on-the-job training which you can get, away from the workplace-but in a depressing number of industries, it has received a surprisingly bad press. Most industries naturally have their own pet horror stories but, on closer examination, these invariably stem from basic flaws in the selection or utilisation procedures rather than from some native fault in the simulator itself. The author looks to redress the balance by examining in some detail: why a simulator is used, what types of simulator are available, how simulators are used in different industries, how to buy a simulator and what simulators are, and should be, used for
