Abstract :
The authors investigate the characteristics of a variable-focus ultrasonic liquid-lens hyperthermia applicator. This type of lens provides a better dynamic focusing capability for either single-element or linear phased-array transducers. The curvature of the lens is determined by the volume of liquid in the lens. Two types of ultrasonic liquid-lens hyperthermia applicators were investigated. The first type employs a spherical liquid lens and a unfocused square-aperture transducer. The second type combines a linear phased-array transducer with the spherical liquid lens
