Abstract :
The authors show that for a modern radio system, where embedded processing capability offers maximum adaptivity, the systems architecture is of crucial importance; the proposed solution is not meant to denigrate current system design, but to offer an alternative perspective of how to provide performance improvements with the use of inherently flexible architectures. The generic architecture described has the benefit of linking the system performance independently to increases in computational power (both for the DSP devices and the general purpose computer host) as well as improved signal interface technology. In addition, this architectural framework will enable radio system engineers to exploit general-purpose techniques using signal information that will become increasingly digital within the system-certainly from the IF stage
