Abstract :
In modern database systems, the number of simultaneous connections is increasing due to the globalisation of many product and service offerings. With the scale that the Internet has provided, databases are being exposed to an ever increasing number of queries on data. More commonly these queries are based on information retrieval rather than modification. As advances in hardware bring about larger storage devices, there is greater potential of caching queries in order to reduce processing time. This paper presents the novel concept of Smart Queries. Smart Queries go beyond caching, and not only cache query results but automatically update those results as their input tables change over time. Furthermore, Smart Queries allow traditional stored procedures much more flexibility with improved simplicity. This paper presents the Smart Query design and illustrates case studies of the solutions made possible.
