Abstract
GAPS is an innovative concept for the Ultra Short Base Line positioning: the Global Acoustic Positioning System, which combines all the necessary sensors - acoustic, inertial, GPS - in the same housing to provide an accurate positioning of underwater vehicles. A comparison with standard USBL system will highlight the benefits of merging INS and acoustic wide band spectrum technologies, providing more accurate and reliable data of the ship and the subsea vehicle position and attitude as well as higher upgrade rate. The presentation will include theoretical analysis of the concept. Concerning the operational aspects, the merging of INS and acoustic technologies also resulted in a compact design of the 3D acoustic antenna and a plug & play solution.
