Abstract
To provide for computer integrated manufacturing, a huge number of most diverse problems have to be solved. The author focuses on the communication aspect based on OSI service definitions. The one application services to be considered is the Directory Service (DS). The authors give a brief introduction to the current DS and discuss some relevant enhancements to be included in the 1992 specifications. This is followed by a description of the CIM manager, the proposed integration entity. The CIM manager´s requirements are matched against services provided by the directory. In the light of this comparison some useful enhancements of the directory are proposed
