Abstract :
The Barry receiver was not originally designed to supply detailed scientific information. The authors have designed an enhancement which is connected to the Barry sounder receiver to help provide some of this information. It duplicates some of the internal functions but also further analyses the received signals to improve functionality. The complete system is known as the Radio Oblique Sounder Equipment (ROSE). After consideration of the scientific information required it was decided that the first enhancement should be to provide a high resolution colour coded ionogram showing the different mode amplitudes. To provide this and other future enhancements a processing and control unit (PCU) was designed as an `add on´ unit to the Barry receiver
